The focus of the research and teaching activity at the Information and Computer Science department is on advanced computational methods for modelling, analysing, and solving complex tasks in technology and science. The research aims at the development of fundamental computer science methods for the analysis of large and high-dimensional data sets, and for the modelling and design of complex software, networking and other computational systems. The department belongs to the Aalto University School of Science.
The department hosts three national Centres of Excellence: the Centre of Excellence in Computational Inference Research and parts of the Centres of Excellence in Molecular Systems Immunology and Physiology Research and Research on Solar Long-Term Variability and Effects. The department also contributes to the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT and the Helsinki node of the EIT ICT Labs. The department is a member of Informatics Europe, the association of European computer science departments.
Advanced education for international students is provided by the department's four Master's Programmes in Bioinformatics, Foundations of Advanced Computing, Machine Learning and Data Mining, and Systems Biology, and doctoral education is organised within the framework of the Helsinki Doctoral Education Network in Information and Communications Technology.
